403- Honeymoon Planning and Travel Q&A with Irina Vishnevskaya

by Aleisha December 15, 2019
written by Aleisha

What’s more exciting that planning a wedding? Planning a honeymoon! But just like wedding planning, deciding where to go and what to do on your honeymoon can be challenging. On this week’s Bridechilla podcast, guest Irina Vishnevskaya joins Aleisha for a honeymoon planning and travel Q&A episode. Irina is the founder of Allé Travel, a travel planning business that specializes in creating one-of-kind experiences for adventurers. During this episode she answers questions about booking excursions on a honeymoon, traveling during the winter, and the importance of travel insurance.

Listen to the episode

It takes a really, really shit situation to stress me out honestly at this point. It’s like ‘We can fix that’. Where that’s really stressful if it’s your first time dealing with that and it’s your honeymoon.

How to avoid over-planning your honeymoon

When planning a trip, it is important for you and your partner to consider the type of experience you want. Do you want to see and do as much as possible and make the trip an adventure, or are you looking for a more relaxing and restful getaway? Knowing the goal of the experience will help you decide what type of excursions you might plan at your destination. Irina encourages couples not to over-plan their honeymoon. She gives alternatives for making your trip special even if you aren’t looking to be on the go the entire time.

Even if you are delaying, try to do it within a year of your wedding. To me a year, you are still in that post-wedding vibe.

Delay the honeymoon, not the romance

Honeymoons can be expensive and often require time away from work and other responsibilities. Many couples choose to delay their honeymoon for weeks or months after the wedding. If you are delaying your honeymoon, how can you still make your trip feel as special as a traditional honeymoon? There are several tips that Irina shares during the podcast that can help you create a memorable experience regardless of timing. Listen to this episode to hear those ideas and much more on the Bridechilla podcast.

When should you purchase travel insurance?

Once you’ve decided on a honeymoon destination and you’re ready to book, it’s time to consider travel insurance. Should you always get travel insurance? What circumstances might you not need it? What kind and how much insurance should you purchase? The different options available can be confusing. However, during this episode, Irina clarifies the different types of travel insurance and what kind of coverage you should be prepared to buy so that you have full confidence while on your trip.

Don’t force yourself to do something just because it’s your honeymoon and that’s what people say you should be doing.

Travel planners v. travel agents

A common misconception is that travel agents and travel planners are the same. As a travel planner Irina understands the differences between to two. The type of trip and the needs of the person or couple will determine which of the two they should use. Irina explains the differences in the training they have and the services they offer and explains how to decide which you might need. Aleisha and Irina also discuss several other Bridechilla community questions on this honeymoon planning and travel Q&A episode of the Bridechilla podcast.

328- Planning an extended Honeymoon

by Aleisha July 9, 2018
written by Aleisha

For many couples, their honeymoon is possibly the first big trip that you take together and often it goes way too quickly and you are back to reality before you can say boo.
But what if you could extend your honeymoon and go on a long adventure together? Today's guests did just that!
On this episode of Bridechilla Podcast, I speak with Christian and Annabelle (from Bridechilla Directory friend Evergreen Lane Productions) who have just returned from a 13 month extended honeymoon, travelling across 30 states and visiting over 20 national parks.
Not quite ready for the white picket fence life,  Christian and Annabelle devised a plan to buy an RV, pack up their home and commit to life on the road for a year (whilst both working!).
Even if you can't step out of your 'normal' life for an extended time, I know that this episode will inspire you to expand you travel options and hopefully realise that big adventures, don't have to cost big bucks

Create Heirloom Honeymoon Video with Evergreen Lane Productions

by Aleisha June 26, 2018
written by Aleisha

Meet Annabelle of Evergreen Lane Productions

Annabelle creates Honeymoon Films from footage you take on your trip, using gear as simple as your phone if you want! The process is simple, you take the videos, send them to Evergreen Lane Productions, and Annabelle edits your videos into a beautiful, heirloom honeymoon video. Her love of travel and filmmaking shine in this unique service!

Tell us about how you got started in the wedding business and what you love most about working in weddings!

It was my own experience planning a destination wedding that made me realize that my travel films would be a perfect fit for honeymooning couples! For me, the wedding day is just the start of an amazing adventure + I love that the honeymoon is the first traveling you do as newlyweds. Travels with my own husband are some of my own most cherished memories, and I want to help others document those treasured memories as well.

Who do you love to work with?

My favorite couples are the adventurers, the ones who are more excited about planning the epic honeymoon than the wedding day itself. The couples I have the most fun with are ones who have more experiences than kitchen appliances on their registries and who love collecting new passport stamps. You don't have to have a lot of creative experience or fancy gear; we go over exactly what you need and spoiler alert: you can use the camera or phone you already have.

How do you help your clients "keep their chill" during the wedding planning process?

Planning + dreaming of your honeymoon is a nice break from wedding planning and a friendly reminder that life will go on after this One Big Day...in fact, it's kind of the best part!

What do you feel makes you unique and different from other wedding pros?

I don't know of any other videographers or editors who are doing honeymoon films, but every one of my clients has been SO thankful, even watching their vacation films years later with tears in their eyes because they're such beautiful memories. Plus, I keep things down to earth: no fancy gear to buy (unless it's your thing!), no complicated tricks to learn (I have a printable pocket guide you can take with you), and no stress when you come home (all your footage gets sent to me so you can focus on recovering from jetlag).

What is your favorite wedding related memory?

My husband and I got married on an island off the coast of Belize. The whole trip was amazing from start to finish, but my favorite memory was when my wedding planner rescued us from the airport after a flight delay. We'd missed the last water taxi to the island but she found us a private boat captain who was willing to take us (in the rain, in the dark) and 12 of our other wedding guests secretly to the island. Thankfully, the weather was perfect on our wedding day + everything else went so smooth!

What is one thing you wish more couples knew about wedding planning?

It's ok to have the wedding you want to have. And it's ok to ask for experiences on your registry or ask for money for your honeymoon. The stress of "making everyone happy" is not worth it!

Share 3 fun facts about you and your business!

1. I currently live in an RV with my husband and our cat - we're traveling around the US!

2. I've visited all 7 continents - Antarctica was my last and we set foot there a week before my 30th birthday.

3. I got started in filmmaking because of an obsession with Lord of the Rings in high school - my friends and I even recreated our own version: acting, shooting, and editing the whole thing!

We hope you have enjoyed getting to know more about Annabelle and her heirloom honeymoon video editing service,  Evergreen Lane Productions. Visit their profile in the Bridechilla Wedding Directory or their website to learn more!

Unique Honeymoon Ideas for Adventurous Couples

by Aleisha October 25, 2017
written by Aleisha

A honeymoon is a needed escape from the constant ruckus of wedding planning. Even Bridechillas and Groomchillas doing their best to follow wedding hacks will feel the stress of planning a wedding, whether due to the time it takes, the money involved, or the pesky opinions of friends and family that always seem the find their way into the planning process. I don’t care if Aunt Muriel prefers trout to Salmon, thinks we need a full orchestra instead of a single DJ, and wants a seat cover on all chairs at all times; we aren’t planning a wedding around Aunt Muriel!

Just like with weddings, your honeymoon shouldn’t be stressful but it often ends up inducing panic. You try to plan the perfect romantic getaway filled with endless memories of moonlit walks on a beach in Maui or sipping hot cocoa with a window to the powdery slopes of the Swiss Alps. Instead, you’re arguing with an airline while you’re stuck in the airport because your flight was cancelled and they couldn’t fit you onto another plane to the Bahamas. No one wants to be stuck in an airport for 12 hours with their recently beloved thinking in a sarcastic tone, “these are the memories we will always hold dear.”

Let’s face it, the honeymoon takes a necessary backseat to the wedding during the planning stage—for good reason—but that doesn’t mean your honeymoon can’t give you the moonlit walks you hoped for or the cocoa-sipping mountain hideaway you dreamed of. In fact, a honeymoon should be about you as a couple, personalized to the way you want to travel.

Just like Aunt Muriel’s opinions about the wedding, a honeymoon needs to reflect the type of experience you want, turning anywhere into a signature destination. As no two couples will have the same wedding, no two honeymoons should be alike, which is why we’ve provided honeymoon inspiration for four different types of couples.

The Pop Culture Couple

Spend a day wandering around historic Toledo, which became a World Heritage Site in 1986.

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular television shows around, causing shrieks of panic and joy, inducing stress levels similar to when planning a wedding. A 12-day tour of Spain captures the real-life filming locations for the series blending the scenery from season 7 with actual fortresses and palaces, minus the dragons.

Walk along the black sand beaches of Vik where Jon Snow began his mission to capture a White Walker.

The true pop culture couple can keep pace with the glamour of the series, traveling to Iceland on a 7-day Game of Thrones tour to reminisce about the love of Jon Snow and Ygritte, who’s real-life alter egos—Kit Harington and Rose Leslie—became engaged in September of 2017.

The Adventurers

Hike through a sassafras forest and past a waterfall to Lake St. Claire, a glacial lake in Cradle Mountain National Park.

Rarely can one trip offer enough adventure to last a lifetime, but the 17-day tour of Australia captures the highlights of the continent Down Under along the east coast of Queensland, traveling down to Sydney, and touching the remote, pristine forests of Tasmania.

Start your trip with two days of scuba diving or snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. It’s the largest coral reef and the largest living thing on Earth.

The active couple gets to scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef and hike through Daintree National Forest before they kayak off the coast of Tasmania. Experience the stunning countryside and the splendors of physical diversity.

The Chocoholics

Spend your afternoon wine tasting in Umbria’s hilltop villages.

Chocolate lovers deserve a chocolate paradise in the classic medieval towns of the Italian region of Umbria on an 8-day tour. Chocolate equals passion, romance, delicacy, and inspiration, which provides endless gratification in a country celebrated for its pleasures. Step away from the store-bought candy bars, as delicious as they can be, for a tour worthy of social media in its landscape, architecture, and the chocolate that flows like water.

Bora Bora and Chill

Relax in your bungalow with a private massage after a week of paddle boarding, bike ridding, and hiking.

The true Bride- and Groomchilla know how to relax, and there couldn’t be a better place to chill than in French Polynesia and Bora Bora with a week-long honeymoon featuring iconic over-water bungalows. Crystal clear water? Check. Watch fish swimming from a glass floor panel in your room? Check. Luxury suites and spa treatments? Double check. A four-by-four jeep tour of the forest? Yes, please.

Zicasso has taken the exasperation out of traveling, providing a perfect way to enjoy your stress-free honeymoon and relax after the emotional rollercoaster that is the Wedding.

About the author: Doug Weissman is a travel writer for Zicasso. In May, he proposed to his girlfriend of three years in front of the Bajos del Toro waterfall. He planned his Costa Rican proposal with the help of Zicasso’s travel specialists. Zicasso is a luxury travel referral service that matches guests with travel specialists around the world. Specialists handcraft custom vacations according to guests’ interests.

How to travel Hack your Honeymoon

by Aleisha March 23, 2017
written by Aleisha

A 'luxury' honeymoon at a far away location does not have to come with the luxury price.
Newlyweds continue to expand their horizons, looking for less traveled, attractive honeymoon destinations to explore and chill post wedding.

The choice of destinations continues to grow with exotic sites that are far from the popular, mainstream options AND the beautiful thing is, you can combine some clever hacks and fantastic deals to get your tropical vibes or adventure boots on, for a fraction of the cost of a 'normal' honeymoon.

So, start married life with an incredible adventure and get planning.

Travel Hack your Honeymoon

Travel hacking is the art of collecting frequent flier points and miles to get free flights, hotels, tours, and more. It can also involve using cashback websites, error fares and affiliate links. This may sound complicated but in fact it is easy peasy.

My husband Rich and I save at least 10-50% off hotels (plus earning free nights) whenever we travel.

Firstly, we always use cash back websites Ebates. It is so simple and once you start using it, I guarantee, you won't want to make an online purchase without it.

Ebates offers a bunch of extra coupon codes that you can use in addition to the 6% off (see below for this weeks deals).
Great for saving good money off honeymoon packages.

Example of Ebates deals

Fabulous Hotels for less

Hotels.com also has a handy Hotel Rewards system, you collect 1 night for every night you stay at an eligible hotel. Once you have collected 10 nights, you'll get 1 free night at an eligible hotel (Again, hello honeymoon).

By using a credit card with frequent flyer rewards points and miles for these transactions...for our honeymoon we used our American Express card which also gave us an automatic upgrade, late checkout and spa credit....FANCY!
By combining these steps you save, save, save. We also subscribe to Secret Flying for access to amazing error fares and hotel deals.

Private homes of the rich and famous...

If you are looking for honeymoon inspo editor-in-chief Meg over at Bridechilla Podcast favourite, A Practical Wedding, has published 40 of the best honeymoon destinations with some great tips for thinking outside the box and staying on budget.
Combine these destination with the wonderful world of Airbnb (use my member link for a credit) and you have yourself a whole new project to immerse yourself in (seriously, some of these places are amaaaaazing).
Bridal Musings have done some of the work for you and found these 10 amazing honeymoon airbnbs from around the world which will get your juices flowing, from stilt houses under the stars to fairy lit tree houses in the woods!
Warning, there are some seriously epic looking locations on offer, you may just need 2 honeymoons!Ahhh, is there such a thing as renewing of your honeymoon?
Still looking for more honeymoon inspo? Check out our list of some of the hottest 'new' (and historically old!) honeymoon destinations below.

Feeling Tropical?

Cartagena

It’s not a secret that couples have an infatuation with a honeymoon in a paradisiacal, hot spot, but really what’s not to love?

Warm temperatures, fantastic beaches and lots of activities, you named it!
Besides the more popular choices, there’s a vast array of options for those who want to experience the magic of the Caribbean without going to the same places that most people go and recommend.

Cartagena (Colombia), Aruba, Martinique, and Puerto Rico are some of the spots that can offer you a beautiful experience in a tropical setting without having to deal with huge crowds or feeling like you’re doing the same as all the other couples.

Going small in the old continent

When you talk about a honeymoon in Europe, most people will point you towards the main cities, starting with the famously known as the city of love, Paris. But you can take the less beaten path and still enjoy a once in a lifetime experience.

Destinations like Sicily (Italy), Alentejo (Portugal), Bordeaux (France), and Cork (Ireland), just to name a few, offer a broad spectrum of options for the most discerning tastes, going from warm coastal little villages all the way to small rural settlements with incredible natural landscapes.

Taking the leap to a whole new culture in Asia and Oceania

If you´re looking for something even more exotic and adventurous, you can make the long journey all the way to the other side of the world.

China, Thailand, Indonesia are some of the Asian countries that offer an unusual combination of ancient culture, breath-taking natural landscapes and distant locations where you can take all the time in the world to relax and rejoice in the arms of your loved one.
On the other hand, Australia and New Zealand are among the best places that the oceanic continent has to offer for newlyweds that love to have fun, filled with adventures.
